Westfields and Hereford Pegasus served up an exciting cup tie at Old School Lane on Thursday night in front of a good-size crowd as Westfields retained the Dennis Hartland Trophy with a hard-fought 3-2 win.

During a goal-less first half both sides had opportunities to have opened the scoring but Aidan Thomas and Richard Greaves both went close for the visitors whilst Pegasus were thwarted on two occasions by outstanding saves from Steve Sarkodie in the visitors’ goal who tipped over a fierce drive from Miles Langford and then kept out a low shot at the foot of the post.

However, after the break Westfields took the lead with a cracking goal from 25yds when Umar Basit let fly into the bottom corner of the net to give Westfields the lead.

However, Pegasus came storming back and Miles Langford seized on a hesitant Westfields defence to level the scores from close range.

Westfields then went ahead 2-1 when a cross from the right was headed home powerfully at the far post by Richard Greaves to put Westfields back in front.

Westfields then extended their lead with a cracking goal after Greaves was brought down outside the penalty area and Ben Miller curled a cracking free kick into the top left hand corner to put Westfields 3-1 in front.

However, the home side kept going and again it was Langford who seized on an opportunity to reduce the arrears with another goal from close range whilst Keanu Cooper twice had opportunities to increase Westfields’ lead to 4-2 but he missed from close range when through on goal.

The trophy was presented by Mrs Jacqui Hartland (the widow of the late Dennis Hartland) to the Westfields Captain, Sam Rawlings, after the game.
