Voters in Hereford head to the polls next week to choose their county councillor for Whitecross.

The city by-election was triggered after former mayor Sue Boulter resigned a week after the local elections on May 2.

Coun Boulter escorts the special educational needs unit of the school transport service once a week and was unaware that working for the education department disqualified her from being able to stand as a county councillor.

This time around, her husband Dave will be contesting the Whitecross ward for It’s Our County but he said he would not comment on his campaign.

Conservative Party candidate Rob Williams says he will be fighting for additional parking to solve overcrowding from both residential and commercial vehicles in the area.

He also says he will tackle speeding and get potholes fixed in the ward.

“In the ward there are a few black spots where speeding is an issue, particularly on Westfaling Street,” he said.

“I would like to install speed indicator devices to reduce speeds and make motorists aware of their speed – to protect residents and drivers.

“Within the ward there are a lot of potholes that need filling in, not only are some square and deep, they can cause damage to cars. They are also a real health and safety issue for cyclists.”

Tricia Hales is standing for the Liberal Democrats.

She said: “Herefordshire born and bred, I am proud of the many projects I have developed over the past 40 years, including the Charity Raft Race, Dial-a-Ride, Horizon Training and I am part of Herefordshire Clean Up Group and Recycling Project.

“I am campaigning to improve traffic calming and parking issues across Whitecross and highlight people’s concerns on local policing.”

There will be polling stations at Whitecross Road’s Hereford Musical Theatre Company on and at the Westfaling Street Scout Hut.
