Proposals to build 15 flats and five houses on the Top Garage site southwest of Bromyard have been backed by the town’s planning and economic development committee.

Committee member Coun Fred Clark, who supported the scheme which would see the existing garage demolished, said: “Bromyard is in commuting distance of Birmingham and is expanding out in that direction, where other developments have also been proposed.”

He explained that, while most new developments in the area have been stalled on the issue of runoff pollution in the river Lugg, the Top Garage proposal was still permissible as it would not add to the volume of waste water arising from the site.

“We were worried the town would be left without a fuel station, but Bishops Garage (on the A44 Bromyard bypass) has now been taken over by Texaco,” he added.

“There were also worries that it would overlook the HOPE children’s centre next door, but there will not now be any balcony windows on that side.”

Two others on the committee supported the plan, with three abstentions. The application is open to public comment until August 24, and is due to be determined by Herefordshire Council by October 5.
