Children in Ross-on-Wye are soon to benefit from a new playground.

Town councillors agreed to spend almost £50,000 to carry out works on a new play area at the Rope Walk.

This week’s full council meeting was told how the investment will go towards new slides, swings and safety measures for the play area which is suitable for two to seven-year-olds.

Former councillor Richard Mayo, who spent years working on the project, said he was pleased with the progress.

“Well done and more power to your elbow for the new play ground at Rope Walk,” he said.

“I set up the Rope Walk project more years ago than I can remember.

“I’m delighted it has reached fruition and we will have a nice new shiny toddler playground.”

He suggested the council should in future look at creating playground for slightly older children aged between 7 to 12.

“There is a lack of play equipment for slightly older children,” he added.

He said it was always the dream of the Rope Walk group to add more equipment year on year for older children after the new playground was installed.

Deputy mayor Daniel Lister thanked Mr Mayo for all his work towards the new play area.

“Without that work we would be nowhere near the stage where we are at,” he said.

“In terms of a phase two, the older play park, there have been talks about how we could go outside the gated area that is currently there.

“But there are no set plans of how we would do it.”

Mayor Jane Roberts said the council wants to look at a play areas strategy for the whole of the town.

“I think it’s very important to have very good play equipment within walking distance of as many places in Ross as we possibly can.”

The total cost for the playground is £49,187.63 and it is expected to be ready for November.

Local charity the Lydia Cole Foundation contributed £423.63 to the project.
