Striding out in Walk for Tom

People will be striding out in their own social bubbles later this month to raise funds in aid of Cancer Research Wales.

Walk for Tom is a socially distanced event for people in their own area and is taking place on the weekend of Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th March.

This event is to help fund lifesaving research for cancer patients in Wales in honour of Monmouth School for Boys' pupil, Tom Walker.

Tom was a quiet, considerate and caring boy from Devauden and, and alongside his father, Tim, took part in the first Brecon Beacons Night Hike in March 2018, raising £700 for Cancer Research Wales.

Tom found it hard but he carried on with lots of encouragement, despite being the youngest participant on the hike.

Sadly, Tom fell ill in May 2018 and, after just over two weeks of illness, he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia.

Tom's condition rapidly worsened and he died on 14th June, aged just 13.

However, Tom's parents, Tim and Debbie, sisters Holly and Emily, and the amazing community in the Monmouth area, have tirelessly raised funds for a research post in his memory.

The first £100,000 award has been made to Cardiff University, for research into a potential treatment for acute myeloid leukaemia, and a research scientist started work in January.

All funds raised from this latest event will be donated to Cancer Research Wales, specifically restricted to the Tom Walker fund.

Registration for this event is £10 per person and packs can be purchased from Devauden Village Shop and Newchurch Farm Shop or by visiting: https://www.cancerresearchwales.co.uk/produ.../walk-for-tom/

All entrants will get a branded 'Walk for Tom' beanie hat.

Once registered, each participant will receive a welcome pack via email, containing event information and fundraising materials.
