Special Olympics GB, which supports over 10,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities, is launching a network in Herefordshire later this month.

Special Olympics GB is part of the global Special Olympics organisation who aim to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition, in a variety of Olympic-type sports, for children and adults with an intellectual disability, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness.

Special Olympics GB is made up of 140 clubs & networks delivering a wide range of sports and training opportunities across the country. The launch of the Herefordshire network takes place at Hereford Sixth Form College on the 30th January at 6.00pm.

Chris Corke, main contact for the new Herefordshire network said, 'A local Special Olympics network in Herefordshire is a fantastic platform to support clubs and community organisations in engaging individuals with intellectual disabilities in a range of sports and competitions.'

'Although the longer term aim is to see participants go on to compete as athletes in local and regional competitions, we initially want to ensure that the network can offer activities that adults and children can simply give a go and hopefully enjoy'.

He continued, 'We would like to encourage local sports clubs and community organisations to attend the launch event which will include presentations and speakers from Special Olympics GB, Special Olympics Herefordshire and other organisations that are currently supporting the network.'
