A rock legend from the 1970s will perform alongside local children and musicians at a charity carol concert in Hereford this Christmas.

John Lees, the founder and driving force behind progressive rock band Barclay James Harvest, will be just one of many performers at this year’s Soldiers’ Charity Carol Concert at Hereford Cathedral on Tuesday December 19th.

Others taking part include children from Stretton Sugwas Academy Primary School and Weobley High School; Herefordshire Youth Concert Band, Marches Military Wives Choir and Hereford Police Choir.

Chairman of the county branch of The Soldiers’ Charity, Mike Rowlatt, said: “We’re delighted John Lees has agreed to take part in this year’s concert. He’s an outstanding musician with a well-deserved international reputation.

“The concert is very well supported and we always try to include an element that is not seen as typically associated with Christmas, to keep focus on the fact that while it is, of course, a time for great celebration, it’s also a time when we can reflect and remember those who can’t be with us.

“Our main thrust, as always, is to draw to peoples’ attention to the work and sacrifice our soldiers make on a daily basis, while giving the audience an opportunity to listen to and join in the celebration of traditional carols.”

There will also be a short address by Stuart Anderson; a businessman, Herefordshire councillor and former soldier, Stuart suffered from PTSD. He will talk about his experiences and the importance of seeking support from organisations such as The Soldiers’ Charity.

Tickets are priced from £5 to £15 and are on sale at the Courtyard Theatre 01432 34055 www.courtyard.org.uk/abf
