People at risk of Hepatitis C in Herefordshire are being urged to come forward to get tested, and treated, as part of World Hepatitis Day 2021.

World Hepatitis Day on 28 July 2021 aims to raise awareness of Hepatitis C and the importance of getting tested.  With a person dying every 30 seconds from a hepatitis related illness, we can’t wait to act on viral hepatitis.

That’s why nurses at Wye Valley NHS Trust have been visiting locations around the county in the ‘Hepatitis C testing bus’ this month offering free testing to those at risk, and will be located outside Ross Community Hospital on Thursday 22 and 29 July, from 11am to 3pm.

Lotte Hart, hepatology advanced nurse practitioner at Wye Valley NHS Trust, said: “We’re spreading the message that Hepatitis C is curable, so it’s important if you think you are at risk to get tested.

“The Hep C bus visits this month have been going really well with people attending for testing, fibroscans, consultation and education about the virus and symptoms.

“People at risk of Hepatitis C include those sharing un-sterilised needles – particularly needles used to inject recreational drugs, razors or toothbrushes; and having unprotected sex. I would urge people to get tested or contact their GP for testing.

“Hepatitis C is a virus that infects and damages the liver.  In most cases Hepatitis C treatment can clear the virus and stop liver damage.  If left untreated, Hepatitis C can lead to cirrhosis (scarring) and/or liver cancer, so testing is vital”.

If you have Hepatitis C, or think you could have it, don’t ignore it.  Speak to your nurse or doctor to find out what treatment and care options are right for you.

The Hep C bus has been provided by Operation Delivery Network at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.
