A record number of Hereford Sixth Form College students, 21 in all, have just received offers of places to study at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

This means that 38% of the College’s 57 applicants received offers, in line with the College’s ten year average but well in excess of the national offer rate of less than 20%.

Commenting on this success, Principal Peter Cooper said: “I am absolutely delighted that our success has been continued and extended. This is a tribute first and foremost to our students for their ambition in applying to the most competitive universities, for their tenacity in negotiating the application process and successfully demonstrating their academic potential.

Our students are encouraged to be aspirational both by our staff and by the universities themselves; and of course parents and guardians also play a key role.

Our link colleges at Oxford and Cambridge run outreach programmes including subject specific study days and summer schools; and Hereford Sixth Form College is the regional hub for Cambridge’s “HE+” programme of extension lessons in Hereford and master classes with Cambridge academics.

As well as academic preparation, our staff provide additional practical guidance to students in their choice of course, making their applications and preparation for entrance tests and interviews. The subjects for which our students have been offered places range from Music to Biochemistry and Medicine to Law; of particular note this year are the six students receiving offers to read Mathematics.

Of our early applicants who did not receive Oxbridge offers, all have however already been offered places at other leading universities including Imperial, Warwick, Bristol and Birmingham”.

Georgie Archer will be reading Languages at Trinity College, Cambridge and said, “I’m proud of what I have achieved and I look forward to pursuing my passion for languages at one of the best universities possible. The support from Hereford Sixth Form College, as well as the capacity to personalise and expand my studies has been exceptional. I’m grateful for all of the support received throughout the process – I wouldn’t have had the confidence to even apply without it.”
