A new Mayor and Deputy Mayor have been elected in Abergavenny.

New Mayor Councillor Tudor Thomas who is Town and County Councillor for Priory Ward received support of the majority of Councillors present and will take up the position with immediate effect with his wife Jan as Mayoress.

Following his election as Mayor, Councillor Thomas said “I am honoured to be able to serve as Mayor of Abergavenny. Having lived in the area for nearly four decades I value the uniqueness of Abergavenny as a small border town and the welcoming character of its residents and businesses.  I enjoy being a Town and County Councillor where I can represent residents and develop and safeguard the town and having the opportunity to be Mayor is wonderful privilege. Education and young people are very much my focus of interest and this has influenced my chosen charities for which I will be raising funds during my Mayoral year. My chosen charities are Cyfannol Women’s Aid, Abergavenny Foodbank and the KHS Hardship Fund."

"I would like to express my sincere thanks to Councillor Tony Konieczny and his wife Sue who have been Mayor and Mayoress for the past two years. Tony has steered the Council through two difficult years and on behalf of all Town Councillors I would like to thank him for his hard work and commitment."

"I am determined to continue to steer Abergavenny Town Council forward in a positive manner and for the Town Council to play its part in helping the community recover after the coronavirus pandemic”."

Councillor Teslin Davies was voted in as Deputy Mayor. Councillor Davies was Mayor in 2018-19 so is no stranger to the role and will deputise for Councillor Thomas as required.

“I am thrilled to be voted in as Deputy Mayor. I thoroughly enjoyed my time as Mayor and am very much looking forward supporting Mayor Tudor Thomas. I hope as the year progresses that more events can be organised and that myself and the Mayor and Mayoress can get out and about to see first hand the wonderful community activities and support available in Abergavenny” said Deputy Mayor Teslin Davies.
