Ross-on-Wye mayor Daniel Lister says we should all take a moment today to remember those who sacrificed so much for the UK’s freedoms.

Today marks the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day which marks the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces on Tuesday, 8 May 1945.

Plans to celebrate the day across the country were disrupted by the government’s coronavirus lockdown.

But this won’t stop county residents from marking the momentous day in their own way at home.

Councillor Lister said: “75 years ago today, the end of World War 2 was announced.

“There were some wonderful plans for Ross to Celebrate VE day along with the Royal British Legion, who we know will be as disappointed as we are, but it’s important to ensure the safety of others.

“A day of such importance could never go unmarked, as we remember many local people who gave so much for the freedom of the country and its future.

“There will still be celebrations and time to reflect, remembering in our own way from the safety of our homes, gardens or door steps including a 2 minute silence at 11am.

“Cornet, trumpet and bugle players will play the last post at 3pm and the BBC will broadcast a speech by Winston Churchill where we will undertake the Nation’s toast to the heroes of World War 2 repeating the words ‘to those who gave so much, we thank you’  taking a moment to remember.

“At 6.55pm our town crier will be making a ‘cry for peace’ and this will be recorded for a later viewing.

“I am sure there will be many of you taking part in a socially distanced street party, placing chairs and tables in your gardens for a picnic and a few drinks.

“I too shall be in my garden to raise a glass with neighbours but please do remember the two metre rule and try not to venture from your garden.

“Let’s take time to reflect and honour the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice to make VE day possible. “
