Its over 5 years ago since husband and wife, Grahame Penny and Maggie Taylor, purchased Whitney Bridge at Whitney-on-Wye and moved in to the small attached toll house in January 2012.

The couple have made significant investment to improve the facilities at the Bridge over the years and are about to embark on their biggest project yet - the building of a new toll house, café restaurant, visitor centre, shop and eco lodge development.

“The work, which will commence in June, will be a great boost to the local economy by generating many local jobs and attracting substantially more visitors to the area.” Said Maggie Taylor.

“All of the planned riverside development is aimed at diversifying the Toll Bridge Business and preserving the Toll Bridge heritage for the future whilst keeping the toll fee to a minimum for on-going maintenance.

We’re starting off by rebuilding the original Toll House which burnt down in the 1940s. Once that’s done we’ll start on the conversion of the existing Grade 2 Listed Toll Cottage to a café restaurant, visitor centre and shop for local artisan products to be showcased.

The final phase will see the building of three Eco Lodges alongside the River Wye. These four-star lodges will enhance the area significantly for visitors who want to take advantage of the fishing, cycling, canoeing, wild swimming, walking and the historical tourist attractions all around us.”

The work on the redevelopment of the bridge will be well documented as it progresses on the Whitney Bridge website at www.whitneybridge.co.uk
