A popular bridge spanning the River Wye that has been used as a location for Netflix dramas is to be refurbished.

The Grade II listed Tintern Wireworks Bridge, which lies on the border of Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire, is in poor condition and in need of repairs.

A joint project to renovate the bridge will be carried out by Gloucestershire County Council and Monmouthshire County Council, but investigative works need to take place first to establish the extent of the repairs required.

The investigative work will take place over five days next week, from Monday 22 to Friday 26 February, by contractors XEIAD.

Marshals will be placed at either side of the bridge during the work and access for pedestrians will be permitted when required and safe to do so. Vehicles are not currently able to use the bridge due to structural concerns.

The investigative works will be followed by the design of the scheme, which will be put together later this year.

Contractors will then be selected to carry out the project, which is due to get under way later next year and is expected to take up to eight months to complete.

The repairs are essential as previous assessments of the condition of the landmark have identified several defects, cracking and widespread corrosion.

Cllr Vernon Smith, Gloucestershire County Council cabinet member for highways, said: “It’s great news that this landmark is going to be refurbished and we look forward to working with our colleagues in Monmouthshire to deliver this scheme.

“I’m sure the renovation of the bridge will be widely welcomed and the investigative works next week will enable us to press ahead with this important project.”

Cllr Jane Pratt, Monmouthshire County Council cabinet member for highways, said: “I am very pleased that work is being undertaken to refurbish Tintern’s Wireworks Bridge. This collaboration between Monmouthshire County Council and Gloucestershire County Council will help to preserve this important heritage site for future generations.”
