Hundreds will gather at Hereford Cathedral before Christmas during one of the region’s largest remembrance events.

For the first time since 2019, members of the public can attend the St Michael’s Hospice Light up a Life event on Sunday 18th December.

Earlier that weekend, a Wall of Remembrance will be installed outside the Cathedral featuring the names of all those being remembered this Christmas by Hospice supporters.

Julie Mirfin takes part in Light up a Life each year. Her late husband, Stephen, was cared for by St Michael’s, and died at the Hospice in June 2020. She says Light up a Life has been a great source of comfort to her, particularly visiting the Wall of Remembrance. Earlier this year, Julie became a Day Services Volunteer at St Michael’s.

“We both felt a sense of peace at St Michael’s, and I get that now through Volunteering,” she said.

“When the Light up a Life Wall of Remembrance is installed, I take our dog, Candy, for a walk each day to see it. I read out Stephen’s name and it’s just so comforting to see it there. It provides a connection to him and means a lot to me.”

Anyone can dedicate a light to someone they will be remembering this Christmas. It will feature on the Hospice’s website and, if a light is dedicated by 8th December, will feature on the Wall of Remembrance and the Books of Remembrance at the Cathedral.
