Gwent Police’s newest recruits are today being welcomed into Force by the Chief Constable and Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Gwent.

Chief Constable of Gwent Police, Julian Williams, joined Gwent PCC Jeff Cuthbert at a passing out parade in Newport which sees 50 new officers coming into Force.

The passing-out parade is a traditional ceremony that marks the transition from trainee police officer to probationer. From today, these officers will be visible on your streets in the start of each of the officer’s policing careers, helping keep the communities of Gwent safe.

Since April 2018, 52 new officers have been recruited, trained and deployed throughout Gwent, with a further 26 set to arrive in September 2018.

This has been achieved from a successful recruitment drive within Gwent. A further recruitment drive will take place early 2019.

The Force is also pleased that intakes have included more officers from minority ethnic communities, broadening the diversity of our workforce and skills available to effectively police the public. This has been achieved through targeted recruitment activities including community-based drop ins and awareness sessions.

Chief Constable of Gwent Police, Julian Williams said: “I am proud and delighted to welcome these 50 new officers to Gwent Police.  The experience, knowledge and skills they bring with them will be invaluable in protecting the communities of Gwent.  I congratulate these officers and look forward to working with them to make Gwent a safer place for everyone.”

The funding of the Force and the provision of policing services form part of PCC Jeff Cuthbert’s statutory duties and it is his responsibility to ensure that Gwent has appropriate levels of policing to meet the requirements of our busy communities.

Welcoming the new recruits, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent, Jeff Cuthbert, said: ““I am delighted to welcome our new Constables to Gwent Police. These additional 50 officers, along with the many others we have recruited, will ensure that we maintain frontline policing while investing in tackling emerging issues such as cybercrime.

“I would like to congratulate everyone who took part in today’s parade; they will be key in our mission of preventing crime, while protecting the public and helping those in need.”
