Driver dead after lorry crashes off M4

A man has died after the lorry he was driving crashed off the side of the M4 near the Prince of Wales Bridge.

At 10.30am today, Gwent Police responded to a report of a serious road traffic collision. It was reported that a lorry had left the carriageway and gone down onto the embankment and onto land alongside the M4 Westbound at the end of the Prince of Wales Bridge.

The male driver of the HGV lorry was airlifted to University Hospital Wales. He has since sadly died of his injuries.

No other motorists were injured and Gwent Police have now left the scene.

Chief Inspector of Operational Support, Martyn Smith explains: “Currently, the bridge is closed east and westbound while engineers assess the damage to the barriers and carry out emergency repair works.

“We anticipate the bridge will be closed by the Highways Agency for the remainder of the day. Highways England have confirmed that the westbound carriageway is expected to remain closed between Junction 21 and Junction 23 until at least 6am tomorrow morning. We are advising motorists to take alternative routes today.

“Officers are now investigating the circumstances of the collision and asking anyone with any information or anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dash cam footage is urged to contact Gwent Police on 101 or Direct Message us on Facebook or Twitter, quoting log 129 04/09/19.”
