A livestock farmer described as the “backbone” of the agricultural community in Monmouthshire has been recognised with a National Farmers’ Union (NFU) Community Hero award.

Lyndon Edwards from Dingestow, who was made an MBE for services to farming and to the Monmouth community in the 2019 New Year Honours list, has more than 40 years’ experience in agriculture.

A passionate advocate of the industry, he was nominated by local MP David Davies to be the inaugural Monmouth constituency Community Farming Hero.

The NFU launched the new award to recognise individual farmers who play an important role in their communities.

“Lyndon has been the backbone of the farming community in Monmouthshire for as long as I can remember and this award is a thank you for the enormous contribution he has made to the livestock industry,” said Mr Davies.

“His passion, commitment and understanding of agricultural matters are exemplary. Indeed, Lyndon has been very happy to meet with Members of Parliament, Welsh Senedd Members and other elected representatives to explain the importance of agriculture to the rural economy.”

“He is considered the local expert within his peer group when it comes to livestock trade and has been training the local Young Farmers’ for stock judging on a volunteer basis for years.”

Stella Owen, NFU Cymru Monmouthshire county adviser, added: “We are delighted David Davies MP has chosen to recognise Lyndon Edwards as his constituency winner in the NFU’s Community Hero awards.

“Lyndon is someone who is renowned not just in Monmouthshire, but indeed all over Wales, as a fantastic ambassador for his industry. In addition to this, he is also a lynchpin in his local community and is at the centre of rural life; a shining example of why farming is so integral to the fabric of Welsh rural communities.

“Congratulations to Lyndon, and thank you once again to David for working with the NFU to recognise Lyndon’s achievement in this way”.

Mr Edwards will now be put forward to receive a regional award, with winners set to be announced on this year’s Back British Farming Day on Wednesday 2 November.
