County environmental health officers are exploring options to deal with the growing pigeon problem in Ross-on-Wye.

Pigeons gather and roost at the wall opposite the Man of Ross pub which results in a large amount of pigeon faeces on the Wilton Road pavement.

The pigeon population is believed to be at least 500 and residents expect it to double or triple over the next year.

Ross town council was recently told that Herefordshire Council officers had been out to explore proofing options on properties with residents.

Town clerk Sarah Robson said the council had a very productive meeting with the county environmental health officer.

He highlighted that the main priorities were to pigeon proof roofs and ledges on the affected properties.

“I believe the manager also went to see residents to talk about options,” she said.

“I am waiting to hear from him because he was going to go away and make enquiries with his procurement team about the possibilities of getting some pigeon proofing.

“He reported to us that he believes it is up to the individual homeowners to take some action initially.

“He has recommended as a starting point pest proofing the roofs and ledges should be a priority.”

Local resident Geof Lodge had previously offered £2,500 of his own money to the council to take on pest control experts to cull the pigeon population.

His gesture came after Herefordshire Council said funding for a scheme would need to be found.

But councillors said that, despite welcoming the proposals, the town council could not do so.

County council officers have previously said they do not think culling would solve the problem as the population would quickly recover.

Other options that have been suggested to the town council include covering the holes in the wall with chicken wire to stop the pigeons roosting and breeding.
