Drivers who park at Hereford railway station say they are struggling to find a space following the closure of the nearby council-owned car park.

Herefordshire Council shut the well-used Station Approach car park for good on June 21 ahead of construction work for student accommodation at the site.

But since the site’s closure, finding a space at the official station car park has proven difficult for many.

Geoff Evans, who travels from Brecon to use the station, said he struggled to get a parking space when visiting the city last week.

“The car park was full and there were half-a-dozen cars going around looking for a space.”

Mr Evans said he used Hereford station to travel elsewhere and on his return would spend the day shopping in the city.

“The closure of the Station Approach car park at Hereford is resulting in considerable problems for drivers,” he said.

“The NCP car park is now constantly full and people are looking at travelling from different stations with better park and ride facilities.

“The knock-on effect is that they will spend money in those shops, not in Hereford.”

The council has suggested visitors should use their other car parks around the city centre.

They say new signage along Station Approach will help direct people to Merton Meadow which is around half-a-mile away.

Herefordshire Council leader David Hitchiner said at the time of the car park closure that it will provide state-of-the-art accommodation for students of Hereford College of Arts and NMiTE, the city’s new university.

“The project will improve higher education in the region, and delivering the works through the council’s Development and Regeneration Programme will help to support the growth of our local economy and further improve Herefordshire as a great place to live, work, study and visit,” he said.

“There is plenty of parking capacity elsewhere in the city centre and we ask people to make use of the council’s alternative car parks nearby. We would like to thank residents, businesses and visitors for their understanding while works take place on this exciting development.”
