Candidates in Golden Valley by-election announced

The five candidates standing a byelection next month to replace a popular county councillor have been announced.

Peter Jinman of the Independents for Herefordshire represented Golden Valley South, one of the 53 Herefordshire Council wards, successfully defending the seat in May’s local elections.

Sadly Coun Jinman, a senior national figure in veterinary medicine, succumbed to cancer shortly after.

His replacement will be decided by voters in less than four weeks’ time, on Thursday September 7.

With nominations having closed yesterday (August 10), the final five-strong list of candidates is:

Dave Greenow (Conservative)
Sandy Grenar (Labour)
Cat Hornsey (Liberal Democrats)
Mike Jones (Independent)
Toby Howard Latutin Murcott (Independent)

Mr Greenow came second to Coun Jinman in May’s poll. At the same time, Mike Jones, the former True Independents councillor for Weobley ward, was unseated by the Conservative Nicholas Mason.

Cat Hornsey meanwhile is a Hereford city councillor who narrowly lost in Dinedor Hill ward in May to David Davies, also of the Conservatives.

Five polling stations will be in use between 7am and 10pm on the day: Abbeydore Village Hall; Escley & District Sports Pavilion; Ewyas Harold Memorial Hall; Longtown Village Hall; and Vowchurch & Turnastone Memorial Hall.
