A 15 year-old boy was walking with a group of five or six friends near the cricket pavilion on Widemarsh Common just before midnight on Monday, 7 May when a man asked him to "come here" before punching him in the jaw.
The victim and his friends ran along the footpath leading to Penhaligon Way but the victim became separated from the group by another man. The victim then ran in the direction of Grandstand Road.
The offender is described as white, around 6ft 2ins tall, in his mid to late 30s, of muscular build with greying hair that is short at the sides and longer on top. He also had a long pointed nose, was clean shaven and was wearing a white t-shirt and a silver chain.
The second man is described as white, aged in his mid 20s, around 5ft 7in tall, of a slim build wearing a light blue coat with the hood up.
After the assault the victim sat on a wall outside the Coral betting shop on Grandstand Road when a small silver car, possibly a Fiesta pulled up alongside him and opened its doors. The victim ran down an alleyway next to the betting shop and when he turned to look behind him, was punched in the head. He fell to the floor and was assaulted again by at least two men. When the attack finished, he got up and ran away. He has sustained bruising to his ribs and jaw as a result of the assault.
The driver of the silver car is described as having long hair.
Officers are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed either incident, who was in the area or who saw anyone acting suspiciously at the time.
