Liberal Democrat councillor Rowena Hay has been re-elected as the leader of Cheltenham Borough Council.

Councillor Peter Jeffries, who proposed Cllr Hay should be leader, said it was a privilege to put her forward for the position of leader.

His motion was seconded by fellow Cheltenham Borough councillor Max Wilkinson and it was approved by the council.

Newly-elected mayor Steve Harvey said: “Can I congratulate Rowena Hay on being elected as the leader of Cheltenham Borough Council for the next civic year.”

Councillor Hay welcomed all the new councillors who were elected earlier this month and also congratulated Chris Nelson on his election as police and crime commissioner.

“I wish to put on record this council’s thanks to Martin Surl for his dedication to the role of PCC and wish him well in what comes next,” she said.

“I will be writing to Chris Nelson and look forward to hearing of his vision for Gloucestershire in due course.”
