Andy Robertson transfer: Atletico Madrid want Liverpool defender

Atletico Madrid are interested in Liverpool defender Andy Robertson.

Liverpool are lining up a deal for Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez with a view to having the Hungarian as a left-back option alongside Robertson for head coach Arne Slot next season.

But Robertson has now emerged as a target for LaLiga side Atletico Madrid as he heads into the final year of his contract at Anfield.

Robertson's form for Liverpool came under scrutiny last season after errors had slipped into his game after years of consistency.

"When you play for a big club like Liverpool you expect challenges, you expect to have competition, I've always faced that and so has everyone in their own positions," Robertson said recently while on international duty.

"We want the club to be ambitious, they're doing that and wherever we fit into that, if you're happy with the role you stay and do it and if you're not then I'm sure there will be some people out the door as well. That's the nature of football."

Liverpool also have Kostas Tsimikas currently on their books but would be open to offers for the Greek left-back.

Why Kerkez could be perfect replacement for Robertson

At 31, Robertson has shown signs of slowing down following eight years of brilliant service. His marauding runs up the left flank became less frequent last season as he adopted a more conservative role. Tracking data shows declining numbers for sprints and top speed.

He might not be unique in the same way as Alexander-Arnold, whose vision and passing ability are more typical of an elite central midfielder than a full-back. But replacing the qualities Robertson gave Liverpool at his best is still a huge task.

His numbers probably merit greater recognition but it is easy to see why Liverpool have settled on Kerkez, fresh from an excellent season with Bournemouth, as his long-term replacement.

Liverpool agree record Wirtz deal

Meanwhile, Liverpool have agreed a British-record transfer fee of £116.5m to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.

The total package is £116.5m (€137.5m), made up of a £100m plus £16.5m in potential add-ons.

The fee comfortably surpasses Liverpool's own record - but the performance-related add-ons, if achieved, would make it a potential British record fee, with the overall outlay set to surpass the £115m Chelsea paid Brighton in 2023 for Moises Caicedo. Striker Darwin Nunez was Liverpool's previous record signing in 2022.
