A renewed attempt is being made to open a “taproom” in a Herefordshire town after a previous bid nearby was refused.
Mr D Cartwright is seeking planning permission (application 251061) to convert the ground floor of 10 New Street, Ledbury, currently Ledbury Mini Market.
“Patrons would not need to use their car and be able to enjoy the wide range of real ales and craft beers on offer” at the proposed new venue, the application says, adding: “There is likely to be a limited cold food offering and ancillary sales of products.”
With changes to the shop front already approved, the only alterations now proposed would be to internal fixtures and fittings. The hairdressers on the floor above would be unaffected.
The applicant appears to be Dean Cartwright of the Pig Iron Brewing Co of Kidderminster, who in October 2023 applied for permission to convert the property three doors down at 4 New Street, formerly a clothes shop.
This was refused a year ago due to concerns over the impact on the grade II* listed building, and over accessibility and safety issues arising from deliveries to the property on the narrow street.
Number 10 by contrast is not listed, though delivery access would be from the street as previously.
The brewery already runs Weavers Real Ale House in nearby Malvern as well as venues in Kidderminster.
“It is envisaged that the taproom will operate in a similar way to a popular venue in Malvern, known as Weavers,” the current application says.
The change would bring one full-time and three part-time jobs, it says, adding that the venue would open between noon and 11pm on weekdays, till midnight on Saturdays and till 10.30pm on Sundays and bank holidays.
Comments on the proposal can be made until May 26.
