Plans to build three houses in the grounds of a former GP’s surgery will be decided by councillors.

The scheme would see the development of land to the west of the old St John’s House Doctors Surgery at 28 Bromyard Road in St John’s.

The Grade II listed building is now an apartment block known as Cedar Court.

Proposals put forward to Worcester City Council would see the construction of two three-bedroom houses and a one-bed house, each with its own parking space and private back garden.

Neighbours have voiced concerns over the plans, prompting city councillor Richard Udall to ‘call in’ the application.

This means it will be decided by councillors sitting on the planning committee, rather than by planning officers.

A committee meeting at the Guildhall “will allow residents to address the committee and express their concerns in public”, said Cllr Udall.

“As a member of the planning committee, I’m not allowed to express a view on the application prior to determination.

“I have highlighted concerns about the impact upon the adjacent listed building, the impact upon neighbours, the loss of garden space and concern about back fill development as justification for the call in,” he added.

One Bromyard Road resident said: “We have had local residents knocking our door due to their absolute worry and concern regarding this hideous proposal.

“As a local person who has lived in St Johns for 50 years I have watched as this once beautiful area has dramatically declined over latter years.”

Paul Webb said: “The proposed new development would also overlook the day-to-day funeral operations at Bedwardine Funeral Services.

“Privacy and respect for the deceased is paramount for the operation of this business.

“By allowing this application, the council would be responsible for removing the respect and dignity which should be afforded to the deceased being taken into the care of the funeral home.”

Another neighbour said they considered the plan to be “overdevelopment” and raised concerns some of the first floor windows would have a direct view into their living room.
