Flats plan behind pub in Lowesmoor

A plan to build 16 flats on a car park behind a city centre pub has been put forward.

The proposals would see the four-storey apartment building built behind The Firefly pub and various other buildings in Lowesmoor in Worcester.

A statement included with the application said: “It is proposed to redevelop the site and erect a four-storey apartment building to provide a mix of one-and-two bed apartments totalling 16 apartments across the site.

“The proposed development will introduce built form onto a vacant infill site.

“The proposed building has been carefully designed to take cues from the surrounding character of the conservation area.

“It will be of sustainable design and construction and will meet the national space standard requirements.

“It has been designed to respect the surrounding listed buildings, the amenity of neighbouring residents and will use an existing site access to the south-west.”

Due to its location in the city centre, the developer has not included any car parking spaces in the plans.

The flats plan could be the latest addition to a long list of planned developments in Lowesmoor.

A huge multi-million-pound plan to completely transform the area was revealed last year.

The major revamp of Lowesmoor Wharf would include bars, restaurants and cafes, shops, hundreds of apartments, and offices to create a new bustling canalside destination in Worcester.

The enormous project, which is estimated to cost around £85 million, includes 271 apartments as well as more than a thousand square metres of space for shops and restaurants and more than 3,500 square metres of office space.

Plans to convert the building left empty by the closure of bargain shop Poundstretcher in Worcester’s St Martin’s Quarter into a mix of 24 one-and-two-bed flats was also revealed last year by developer Cedar Worcester.

The city’s Poundstretcher store announced it would be closing last year after the company went into administration.

Betting shop Ladbrokes would also close to make way for the flats.

The latest flats plan can be viewed via the planning section of Worcester City Council’s website.

The application number is 21/00661/FUL.

Public consultation ends on September 9.
