A new Interim chief nurse has joined the trust running the county’s two biggest hospitals as it continues its response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Maggie Bayley took up the post at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust (SaTH) this week, taking the reigns from former interim director of nursing Barbara Beal.

Ms Beal has been shielding since the onset of the Covid-19 outbreak, and trust bosses have now said they need visible leadership.

Louise Barnett, Chief Executive at SaTH, said: “Barbara Beal has been shielding since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Barbara and I have agreed that the priority at this unprecedented time is to have accountable, executive visible leadership on site, and so we are therefore pleased to confirm that we have appointed Maggie Bayley, who will join the trust as interim chief nurse, from 14 April 2020.”

Ms Barnett praised Ms Beal for her work since joining the trust, which runs the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford, last May.

She added: “Barbara has been instrumental in supporting us with leading our quality improvement plan for nursing, midwifery and Allied Health Professionals during her time at the Trust, and I am really pleased to confirm that Barbara will remain at the Trust, continuing this good work, until 24 May 2020.

“I’m sure colleagues will give Maggie a very warm welcome. I know that she is really excited to be re-joining us.”

Ms Bayley previously held the same role at Shropshire Community Health NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the county’s community hospitals.
