Thirty two first-year construction students from Hereford & Ludlow College were invited to the construction site of the City Link Road to sample what it’s really like to work at a live construction site.

Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd welcomed the students on Wednesday 3 May and gave them the opportunity to experience different aspects of construction from engineering and commercial to site health & safety and plant demonstrations.

Andrew Davies, Project Manager Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd said: “The whole team at Alun Griffiths thoroughly enjoyed the day and the students were really engaged with the learning experience.

I was personally very impressed with the level of knowledge and enthusiasm from the students and hope that they all took something of value away from the experience.

An event like this can really help those considering a career in the construction industry to think about where their interests and skills might be. Studying in the classroom is essential but nothing compares with experiencing the job first hand.

Civil engineering and construction is a great career choice, two days are never the same and the challenges are always different”

Paul Brodholt, Head of Construction at Herefordshire and Ludlow College added: "This was a wonderful opportunity for our students, to see for themselves what the world of work will be like when they have finished their studies.

We are very grateful to Alun Griffiths for giving up their time to make our students feel so welcome, and ensuring that the event was relevant and interesting.

The students were hugely engaged with thisreally well-organised industry day and we look forward to future collaborations with construction employers to enrich our students' experience here at the college."

The City Link Road will run from Commercial Road to Edgar Street and will be completed at the end of 2017. The road will open up land for retail, business and housing development, university dwellings and a new transport hub.
