The Brexit Party’s prospective parliamentary candidate for the North Herefordshire constituency has resigned.

Gareth Jones had been selected to fight for the seat currently held by Conservative Party MP Bill Wiggin.

The party announced Mr Jones would be their candidate for the constituency on August 15.

But a party spokesperson confirmed he decided to stand down on August 23 citing personal reasons.

“He decided to stand down after he realised the level of commitment that the role required and the pressure it would put on other parts of his life.

“We didn’t find anything sinister or wonderful in his past. It was just a case that the work life balance wouldn’t work for him.”

The party said it would select a new candidate for the constituency in due course.

During the EU membership referendum in 2016, 58.02% of North Herefordshire constituency voters backed Leave while 41.98% voted to Remain.
