Appeal launched for Shrewsbury Town Crier and wife

A JustGiving crowdfunding page was set up to help a well-known Shrewsbury couple, Martin and Sue Wood

The pair are a familiar sight in the town: Martin is the Town Crier, and Sue his wife is a keen supporter of community events in the town.

Local Beth Heath set up the JustGiving page on Saturday, which after being shared more than 100 times on Facebook, has already raised £395 of its £18,000.

Sue is a wheelchair user and is hoping to upgrade her current chair to give herself greater mobility and independence.

Writing on her JustGiving page, Beth said: "Following the Christmas light switch on in Shrewsbury Town Centre I enjoyed a lovely chat with Martin and Sue. They told me about Sue's recent 'test drive' of THE most awesome wheelchair which means she can be upright. This would revolutionise Sue's entire life and help her manage her spasms better."

She continued: "For those people who know of Martin and Sue they will know they're a very giving couple who have supported Shrewsbury and Shropshire for over 30 years."

Adding: "If the couple have touched your life in any way great or small then please join me in giving them THE best Christmas present imaginable and enabling Sue to have the chair of her dreams which is £15,000."

Beth explained that she is also raising money for new town crier clothes for Martin, which also represent a sizeable cost.

Donors left messages of support on the JustGiving page. One wrote: "Martin you've been a great support throughout the years and a true friend of the festivals and our wonderful town - you and Sue deserve this and so much more!" Another said: "Great cause Beth, Martin and Sue do so much for our wonderful town."

At the time of writing the JustGiving page had reached £395 of its £18,000 target.
