A woman has been arrested after a baby girl from south Manchester died in hospital.
The woman, 25, is held on suspicion of child neglect and is still in custody, Greater Manchester Police said on Friday.
Officers received a concern for welfare call to Platt Lane, Fallowfield, on Thursday morning, the force said.
The baby girl was taken to hospital, where she later died despite the best efforts of emergency services.
Detective Chief Inspector Ian Wrench called it a "devastating incident", which will "cause shock in the local community".
He said: "Please be assured that we are keeping an open mind as we pursue several lines of enquiry, working closely with our partners to understand the full circumstances surrounding how this death occurred.
"We are doing everything possible to provide answers for this baby and their family."
A crime scene will remain in place while officers continue their investigation in Platt Lane, police said.
