Police chief condemns 'significant' attacks against officers as some are injured in Glasgow after Celtic's title win

Police have made 14 arrests after "officers came under significant attack" in Glasgow, and some were injured, following Celtic's Scottish Premiership title win on Saturday.

Around 3,000 supporters gathered in the Trongate area of the city to celebrate Celtic's 3-1 victory against Hearts.

Police Scotland's Assistant Chief Constable Mark Sutherland told Sky News that two officers were injured during the disorder, while three members of the public needed medical help.

He continued: "What we saw at the final whistle and then in the Trongate area was once again unacceptable levels of violence and disorder... our officers came under significant attack.

"Our officers actually attended to a medical emergency within the crowd and a minority of those who were there turned and threw missiles and bottles at our officers."

Of the 14 arrests, 10 were related to Celtic fans gathering in the Trongate area following the match, while four were at the stadium itself.

In a statement, Heart of Midlothian said it "utterly condemns the shameful scenes... which have, once again, embarrassed Scottish football".

Ch Con Mark Sutherland added that officers were reviewing CCTV and "expect that we will make many more" arrests.

He added that Celtic, along with other agencies, should be "taking responsibility" for "safe celebrations at the ground, and away from the ground".

"This is the fourth, or fifth year, where our officers have come under attack... There must be safe arrangements made, and the clubs and the local authorities... must take more responsibility to ensure that's in place," he said.

Hearts had said its players and staff were forced to leave the Celtic Park stadium due to the "menacing and threatening atmosphere" created when thousands of fans stormed the pitch after Celtic's third goal, stopping the game early.

"Reports of serious physical and verbal abuse towards our players and staff, both on the pitch and elsewhere, are deeply disturbing," the club added in a statement.

Police Scotland said it was engaging with Heart of Midlothian to establish if any of their players were assaulted.

The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) said "we utterly condemn the scenes" following the pitch invasion, adding it was "wholly unacceptable and puts those participating and working at a match at risk".

Hearts suggested the pitch invasion caused a "chaotic end" to the match, adding that "nobody seemed to know whether or not the match had been brought to a finish".

But the SPFL said it had confirmed with the referee "that the match had ended and had not been abandoned".
