Borough planners have given the go-ahead to replace some unsafe slabs which were broken during repair work at the iconic Pittville Pump Room in Cheltenham.

Cheltenham Borough Council had to apply for permission to replace the six cracked slabs like for like as the building in East Approach Drive is listed as Grade I.

Hesters Way councillor Simon Wheeler asked what caused the damage.

He said: “I’ve got no qualms about these being changed. In fact, I would very much like to see them replaced.

“But the question I would ask is have we identified why they are broken?

“Looking at them, it’s either they’ve been overrun by heavy vehicles or some seem to be quite badly depressed in areas where surrounding them they look fine.”

A planning officer explained the slabs were broken as a result of works that have taken place to the building.

“My understanding is that machinery that has been needed to carry out other works to the building which have unfortunately caused this damage.”
