An event to celebrate the contribution of Britain’s Armed Forces will feature a Spitfire fly-past.
Wales Armed Forces Day will be held at Caldicot Castle on Saturday, June 28 and though entry is free tickets are required with capacity capped at 5,000.
Attractions will include the RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team, an Ajax tank, parades, military displays and music and activity events for children including military fitness and the Dragons rugby team.
The event is hosted by Monmouthshire County Council and its cabinet member for communities, Angela Sandles, was asked at the council’s May meeting, for details and how the authority is promoting the event.
Cllr Sandles, Labour member for Magor East and Undy, said it would be an “incredible event” and said: “It has been confirmed this week it will feature a fly-past from a Spitfire from the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight as we approach the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.”
The county council is also working with Caldicot Town Council so the town also benefits from the event while Cllr Sandles said other town councils have agreed to provide free buses to the event.
She said more than half of the available tickets have already been taken and anyone unable to apply for a ticket using a QR code can attened at one of the council’s hubs or libraries for assistance.
Conservative councillor for Portskewett Lisa Dymock, who had asked for the update, said she was “so impressed” with the council’s plans but said she’d like further discussion with Cllr Sandles on how the council would reach out to the elderly including through local newspapers.
The event will be open to the public from 11am to 4pm.
