Essential repairs to the statue of Lord Hill in Shrewsbury will begin next month, with work expected to finish in the autumn.
Shropshire Council has appointed heritage contractors to carry out the repairs, while exploring long-term options to replace the fragile statue.
Information panels will be placed around the site to tell the story of Lord Hill and the historic Column.
The monument is the tallest free-standing Doric column in England.
