Visit Worcestershire and National Trust, The Firs, are encouraging residents and visitors to channel their inner Sir Edward Elgar this Movember with the launch of the Elgar 'Tache Challenge.
As Worcestershire prepares to celebrate the 170th anniversary of Sir Edward Elgar's birth in 2027, the challenge offers a fun preview of a wider programme of events and activities planned throughout the anniversary year, celebrating the life, music and legacy of the world-renowned composer.
Working alongside the spirit of the official Movember campaign, visitors are being invited to spend November growing a proud moustache inspired by Elgar's iconic facial hair, with the challenge being to create the perfect "Elgar 'tache".
The celebrations will culminate on Sunday 29 November with the final public opening at The Firs, Elgar's birthplace in Lower Broadheath, before the start of the venue's booked Father Christmas programme. Visitors sporting an Elgar-inspired moustache can enjoy free entry.
A barber will be on hand to offer trims and styling advice, while Little Al's Kitchen at The Firs will be serving moustache-themed biscuits. Visitors can also enjoy music and special activities to mark the occasion.
Ellen Cooper, Site Manager at National Trust, The Firs, said: "We're delighted to be partnering with Visit Worcestershire on the Elgar 'Tache Challenge. Elgar's famous moustache is one of his most recognisable features, making it the perfect way to celebrate his legacy while building excitement for his 170th anniversary year in 2027. We look forward to welcoming visitors to The Firs on 29 November for a fun day of music, activities and, of course, some impressive Elgar-inspired moustaches."
Councillor Adam Kent, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Finance, Corporate Services and Business at Worcestershire County Council, said: "Elgar was a Worcestershire lad who never forgot where he came from, and the world still hums his tunes. He remains one of our county's most celebrated figures, and this fantastic collaboration between Visit Worcestershire and the National Trust offers a fun and memorable way for people to connect with his legacy. It's a challenge close to my heart: my family have been in barbering for more than 100 years, so I know a well-groomed moustache is a serious business, and Elgar's is about as distinguished as they come.
"Tourism is a vital part of Worcestershire's economy, supporting local businesses, jobs and communities right across the county. The Elgar 'Tache Challenge brings together heritage, tourism and community spirit, and gives visitors another great reason to explore one of our most important historic attractions. It's also a wonderful taste of what's to come in 2027, as we celebrate the 170th anniversary of Elgar's birth and invite people from across the country and beyond to discover the landscapes, towns and attractions that inspired his music. I look forward to seeing some impressive moustaches on display, and I'll be watching the trimming technique with a professional eye.”
Visitors are encouraged to share their moustache-growing progress throughout November on social media using #ElgarTacheChallenge and join the celebrations at The Firs on 29 November.
