Anti-terror police arrest two over arson attack on Golders Green memorial wall

Counter terrorism police investigating an arson attack on a memorial wall in Golders Green, north London, last week have detained two people.

A 46-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman were arrested on Monday morning at an address in Romford, east London, on suspicion of arson.

They were both taken to a police station in the capital, where they remain in custody.

The arrests are part of an ongoing probe into the attack on the memorial wall in Limes Avenue at around 12.15am on 27 April.

The wall contained pictures of protesters allegedly killed by the Iranian state in January, following a wave of protests across the country.

Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of Counter Terror Policing London, said: "We are committed to protecting vulnerable communities in the capital.

"Detectives have been conducting extensive inquiries since this incident was reported to us last week and these two arrests are the result of that hard work."

The incident follows a spate of alleged antisemitic attacks in north London.

A double stabbing in Golders Green on April 29 saw two Jewish men, Shloime Rand, 34, and Moshe Ben Baila, 76, also known as Norman Shine, taken to hospital.

The alleged attacker, Essa Suleiman, 45, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Friday charged with attempted murder, where he was remanded into custody.

On April 18, a teenage boy smashed the window of Kenton United Synagogue in Harrow before lighting a bottle and throwing it inside, Westminster Magistrates' Court heard. A 17-year-old admitted arson not endangering life.

The day before, a former Jewish charity building was attacked in Hendon, Barnet, where a plastic bag later found to contain three bottles of fluid was set alight.

Attempted arson attacks were carried out at Finchley Reform Synagogue, and later outside the offices of a Persian media company, both in northwest London, on April 15.

Bottles, one thought to contain petrol, were placed near the synagogue in Fallow Court Avenue, Finchley.

Hours later, an "ignited container" was thrown towards the site of Volant Media, the parent company of Persian news channel Iran International.

In March, four Jewish community ambulances belonging to volunteer-led ambulance service Hatzola were torched in Golders Green.

The resulting fire caused gas canisters inside the ambulances to explode, resulting in around £1 million of damage.
