Work will be carried out on a former railway station building toilets.

twStation House at Bucknell Railway Station, a Grade II Listed building in the village between Knighton and Clun.

It was turned into a holiday home previously, but now the Walmsley family who own the building want to turn the former toilet block into a storeroom.

Shropshire Council planning chiefs have given the plans the green light.

In their planning application, the family said: “Bucknell Railway Station is a Grade II Listed building which has now been converted into a dwelling/holiday accommodation. 

“The building is thought to be circa 19th Century and consists of a stone structure with plain clay tile. 

“The accommodation within the main dwelling is split over single and two-storey accommodation which spreads on an east to west direction along the railway. 

“The ‘outbuilding’ to which this application relates too is a single storey enclosed courtyard which previously housed the station urinal and is of stone construction with a natural slate roof.”

He added: “The proposed works are to convert the existing single storey urinal area into an unheated store through the provision of a slate roof following the profile of the existing and utilising materials to match into the existing building. 

“The urinal has a rudimentary corrugated steel roof over which is a poor state of repair. 

“It is proposed to provide a softwood roof structure above the urinal area with breathable membrane over the timbers, 25×50 treated battens and natural slates over to match the existing roof. 

“Internally the proposals are to remove a non-loadbearing wall within the kitchen area and make good the ceiling and floor and wall to match the existing.

“In summary, it is believed that the proposed works will be of benefit to the existing listed building due to the fact that the outbuildings will be repaired/renovated and maintained in the future which may not be the case if they are to remain in their current state. 

“It is felt that the proposed scheme is sympathetic to the building form utilising traditional materials and techniques to provide an aesthetically pleasing and functional space.”
