Work has started today to improve the historic Cross area of Caldicot.
The ‘Caldicot Cross Destination Space’ project will create a ‘civilised street’ and high quality public space that dramatically improves the historic gateway to the town.
A multi-use space that supports local wellbeing and active travel, promotes events, stimulates business, and links the town centre with the nearby Castle and Country Park.
The £1.57m project is the first of many planned under the wider regeneration scheme and is being funded by Monmouthshire County Council and the Welsh Government through its ‘Targeted Regeneration Investment’ programme and ‘Local Transport Fund’.
Caldicot town was chosen as Monmouthshire’s priority regeneration scheme and forms part of the Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) regeneration plan.
Other projects include the remodelling of the town’s community hub to create dedicated space for co-working and enterprise - providing flexible and affordable accommodation for freelancers and small businesses.
Proposals also include a grant opportunity for eligible property owners and leaseholders to uplift the presentation of commercial properties in the town centre and create additional living accommodation.
Cllr Jane Pratt, Cabinet Member for Operations said: “I am delighted that regeneration plans for Caldicot town centre are about to begin. The work will enable the town to become a vastly improved and more connected space, promoting businesses and encouraging visitors and residents to use the town. Disturbance will be kept to a minimum and I urge residents to continue to visit the town whilst work is going on.”
