Westfields warmed up for their visit to Long Eaton United in the FA Vase next Saturday with a 1-0 home win over fellow Hellenic League Premier Division side Longlevens from Gloucester on Saturday.
The game was played in a very competitive spirit and both sides served up good football and in fact Westfields could have had 2 or 3 early goals but for the brilliance of the visitors’ keeper who saved at point-blank range from Richard Greaves after only 20 seconds and then saved at full stretch from Aidan Thomas and Sam Rawlings to prevent Westfields rattling up an interval lead.
Westfields had to defend on a number of occasions and Man of the Match Paul Hurrell twice got in saving tackles on the visiting attack.
The vital goal came mid-way through the second half when good work by Dan Stoneman saw his cross converted on the volley by substitute Keanu Cooper to give Westfields the win.
Westfields had had a number of other chances in the second half and dangerman Aidan Thomas twice went close and then Sam Hunt blazed over the bar from close range which should have secured a more convincing result.
Westfields now play Long Eaton United in the FA Vase 4th Round on Saturday, kick-off 3pm at Long Eaton.
