Weather warning for snow and ice still in place

A weather alert remains in place for our area as drivers are warned of the risk of ice during the morning rush hour.

Some surfaces could be slippery after last night's rain and sleet showers.

While roads might look clear in places, we are being warned to take extra care when we head out in our cars.

Simon Williams from the RAC has this advice for driving on icy roads:

  • Make sure you leave extra space between you and the vehicle in front - probably ten times the amount you would normally do, because the risk of going into them and not being able to stop is so much higher in those conditions.
  • Leave extra time before setting off to fully de-ice your car - make sure your car is clear of snow and ice before you drive off so you can see where you are going.
  • There is a risk of black ice, especially on roads that are not gritted, so watch your speed.
  • Ensure you have the right equipment in case you break down: warm waterproof clothing, boots, a blanket, a power bank to keep your phone going, a drink, a torch, and a shovel.

Mr Williams says the RAC uses the acronym FORCES as an easy way to remember this checklist - before you leave home:

  • Fuel
  • Oil
  • Rubber (windscreen wipers and tyres - make sure they have the correct tread and are properly inflated)
  • Coolant
  • Electrics
  • Screenwash (that will protect down to -20 °C so it does not freeze over)

A weather warning is still in place until midday today, and another is in force from tomorrow.

The Met Office forecasts a widespread frost tonight, followed by strong winds, rain and snow by tomorrow afternoon.
