Herefordshire Council has back-pedalled on an earlier announcement that new street cameras in Hereford are part of moves to bring in various forms of traffic enforcement in the city.
A council spokesperson confirmed that it had indeed been granted newly delegated powers by the Government, effective from this Saturday (July 22), to use cameras to detect and punish traffic violations such as stopping in box junctions.
“However, no cameras have been purchased or installed for this purpose yet, and it is the intention of the current administration to conduct a full review of this policy going forward,” they said.
The spokesperson explained that cameras which have been spotted newly installed around the city are in fact traffic measurement cameras, “which will assist with producing a new updated local transport plan for Herefordshire”.
The spokesperson apologised for the earlier “error” in saying that the cameras were for enforcement.
