Residents in Herefordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire are being offered the chance to step into the shoes of a police officer as West Mercia Police re-launches its Ride Along scheme.
The initiative allows members of the public to accompany a Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) officer on patrol, gaining a first-hand insight into frontline policing and how officers tackle issues affecting their communities.
SNTs are made up of police officers, special constables, PCSOs and volunteers, supported by additional officers and staff from across the force. They work closely with residents to resolve local problems, from anti-social behaviour to road safety.
Chief Inspector Matt Sanders, who is leading the scheme, said:
“We are very excited to re-introduce the Ride Along scheme to the public. It is a fantastic opportunity for the residents of our three counties to have a real insight into how we police their towns and cities. We hope the scheme will strengthen relationships between police and the public and allow for one-to-one conversations while out on patrol in your area.”
The scheme is open to anyone aged 18 or over who lives within the force area. Organisers say it could be particularly useful for those considering a career in policing, or simply anyone curious about how their community is policed.
