Plans for town arboretum

A local tree warden hopes to create a linear arboretum in one of the county’s picturesque market towns.

Warden Rob Taylor has been working with Ross-on-Wye town council to plant a mile long stretch of trees along the riverside in a bid to attract more visitors to the area.

He hopes the project, which will stretch from Wilton Bridge through Long Acre and around the Rope Walk Meadow, will also provide residents with a feature they can enjoy for the next 100 years.

“The line of different trees will provide a great educational aid for local schools,” Mr Taylor said.

“It will also be a disabled-friendly arboretum as it goes alongside the path.”

The council has approved funding for the scheme but residents will also have the chance to sponsor a tree.

They will be able to choose from a list of species which will be on display in the The Corn Exchange on High Street from mid-April.

Each tree, stake, guard, ties and planting will cost £50 to sponsor.
