North Herefordshire Conservative MP Sir Bill Wiggin has said he will wait to give his view on the Prime Minister’s future until after publication of an inquiry into the “Partygate” allegations.
Senior civil servant Sue Gray is investigating numerous alleged lockdown breaches in Downing Street and Whitehall in 2020.
Mr Wiggin told a constituent who had written to him over her concerns about Boris Johnson’s conduct: “Given the enormity and seriousness of this situation, I believe we should allow the enquiry to conclude.
“I am led to believe this will be in the next few days.”
The row has caused widespread discontent on the Conservative backbenches, with some MPs calling for a police investigation into the alleged breaches.
Mr Johnson said at yesterday’s (Wednesday) Prime Minister’s Question Time that he had yet to take delivery of Sue Gray’s inquiry findings, but brushed off calls for him to resign.
Fellow Conservative MP for Hereford and South Herefordshire Jesse Norman, a long-time ally of Mr Johnson’s, said earlier he “shares the public’s anger at the goings-on in Downing Street”.
