A garden temple in Ludlow has been approved by planning officers.

Malcolm Perrett will place the feature in the ‘formal Italianate-style’ garden of his Grade Two listed Georgian property on Broad Street.

The temple will be made from Portland Stone and will feature six pillars which reference the Doric columns commonly used in Greek and Roman architecture.

It will be used by Mr Perrett and guests to his home.

Elizabeth Davies, case officer at Shropshire Council, approved the proposal.

She added: “It is considered that the proposals will remain in keeping with the existing listed building and will not be of detriment to the character of the dwelling or to the conservation area in which it sits.

“The proposed garden temple is not considered to unduly affect the locality or neighbouring premises.”

The plans received the support of Ludlow Town Council, while conservation experts said it would not impact the existing property which dates back to the 1730s.

Mr Perrett previously said the temple had received the backing of Ludlow Civic Society.

He said: “The garden temple is fully in accordance with the architecture and scale of this very large early Georgian house.

“It has been discussed with the Ludlow Civic Society and with Ben Williscroft, senior conservation and design officer for the South Shropshire area. He has expressed a view that the installation of this building in the garden of 18 Broad Street will enhance the setting of the house.

“The structure will only have occasional use for ourselves and visitors to the house and garden.

“It cannot be seen from the street or any other public area, and due to the high walls surrounding the garden is screened from surrounding properties.”
