A firm is being sought to take over the running of two fisheries in the county.

Shropshire Council is tendering the management of the Oxon and Emstrey fisheries in Shrewsbury.

The exact value of the contract has not yet been revealed, but the authority expects a return for relinquishing its fishing rights at the two pools.

The council wants firms to come forward now, with the contract due to start on April 1 this year.

The tender document reads: “Shropshire Council is seeking a partner/organisation to manage Emstrey Fishery & Oxon Pool Fishery.

“This includes permission to exercise the fishing rights owned by Shropshire Council; the use and maintenance of land associated with those fishing rights; maintaining the fishing pegs; and the undertaking of day-to-day management of the waters including enforcement/bailiff facilities.

“In managing the fisheries and retaining all the income generated it is expected that there shall be a return to Shropshire Council for relinquishing its fishing rights.”

The council says in the tender document that there is an expectation that the successful company will have the necessary skills needed to run busy fisheries and also to run social media profiles for them.

The report adds the successful firm will “cut weed, remove reeds and other water plants and clear the waters of debris on or near the bank including the vicinity of culverts to maintain adequate water levels and to enable the effective use of the waters where appropriate, and to be left in good condition by September 30 each year.

“There shall be adequate bailiffing of the waters, including enforcement against illegal fishing; provision of a single contact point whereby the council can report problems and expect the same to be appropriately rectified within 24 hours; bailiffs appointed to manage the waters are suitably trained and have photographic identity card bearing the signature of the bailiff; ensuring no damage is done to the waters and in particular to the banks of the waters and to make adequate compensation for any such damage.

It adds that the closing date for applications is March 15.
