Proposals for 20 affordable homes in a Shropshire village have been approved after previous plans for the site were rejected.

Developer TC Homes said the new houses in Highley would help retain young people in the area, with 67 households currently waiting for somewhere to live in the village.

Once built, the houses will be taken on by South Shropshire Housing Association, part of Connexus, with 12 to be marketed as shared ownership and the remaining eight to be rented out.

The plans relate to a piece of land east of Bridgnorth Road, which was previously subject to planning applications for nine bungalows and then 20 affordable houses, with a different site layout.

Those schemes were rejected, but Shropshire Council’s south planning committee agreed the new proposals were more suitable.

Concerns were however raised over the need for children from the new development to cross the main road to get to the primary school.

Councillor Dave Tremellen, who represents Highley, told the committee the community felt the site was the “wrong location” for new homes in the village.

Highley Parish Council also objected, saying it would be an “overdevelopment” of the site.

“The parish council is also concerned about access to the site with the increased volume of traffic,” its statements said.

Representatives from TC Homes said the company would be happy to fund a light-controlled road crossing, and agreed to discuss the options with council officers.

This was met with the approval of the committee, and members voted to approve the application.

A report to the committee by planning officer Richard Fortune said: “The revised design, layout and scale has addressed satisfactorily the deficiencies
with respect to the built environment that would be created that were identified in the refusal of the original scheme.

“The design of the proposed dwellings would be in keeping with the locality.”
