A plan to create a highway depot by a Herefordshire town has fallen through.

National Highways applied in April for planning permission to use a plot on Leominster Enterprise Park that had lain unclaimed and undeveloped since 2005.

With a garage, “salt barn”, fuel station and vehicle wash area, the depot would have served vehicles maintaining the county’s main A49, which National Highways manages. The agency had undertaken to employ local staff on the site.

But a National Highways spokesperson  said this week that the “land purchase fell through late in the day”, without giving further details.

With the application withdrawn from the planning process, National Highways will now look for an alternative site, she added.
