Council submits plans to refurb Hereford museum

A planning application has been submitted to transform Hereford's museum and library.

A flagship project in Hereford's town investment plan, Hereford Museum and Art Gallery will significantly enhance the city’s cultural offer. Supporting community engagement it will attract more visitors into the city and help make Hereford a better place for people to live, study, work and invest. The development is being made possible with £5 million secured from government’s Towns Fund and £8 million in council funding. The council has also applied to the National Lottery Heritage Fund to support the development.

The state-of-the-art museum will include new galleries, display spaces and temporary exhibition spaces. This will allow more of the county’s significant collections to be displayed, including the recently-acquired Herefordshire Hoard. Due to open in 2025, it includes the restoration of the historic Woolhope club room as well as new commercial areas, including a shop, café and events/education space. The ambitious development includes making the building the largest retrofitted Passivhaus cultural building in the UK.
